Through collaborative art, I find that students learn to listen, communicate, and respect diverse perspectives while working toward a common vision. Here are a few examples of collaborative projects my students have executed under my guidance, where they learned how to work together and creatively problem-solve.
Whole-school Quilt:
Students were asked to create a giant, whole-school quilt where everyone had a part and that had a unified vision that represented the school. They brainstormed, then designed and executed this amazing quilt that adorns the Community Room. The school is called “Summit”, so students decided upon a mountain scene to represent the school and to symbolize reaching heights through learning.
5th Grade “Thank You” Banner:
Graduating 5th graders from Parmenter Elementary designed then created a large banner for the end of year celebration to honor all those who taught, encouraged and supported them throughout their years there. They brainstormed, allocated tasks then executed this beautiful bouquet and message of thanks that was displayed in the hallway at the end of year graduation and celebration.
Shakespeare Sets:
Upper Elementary students loved creating the sets for their theatrical production of “The Tempest”. They learned that for such a big job, it is important to be organized, use everyone’s efforts and skills, and divide up the tasks! They were very proud of their accomplishment, and how it all came together.
